Twitter Trolls Jailed For Sending Abusive Tweets

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 25 Januari 2014 | 10.03

By Nick Pisa, Sky News Reporter

Two people who sent abusive and menacing tweets to banknote campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez and Labour MP Stella Creasy have been jailed.

Isabella Sorley, 23, and John Nimmo, 25, posted dozens of abusive tweets against both women before they were arrested.

Senior district judge Howard Riddle jailed Sorley for 12 weeks and Nimmo for eight weeks as well as ordering them to pay £400 compensation to each victim.

Earlier this month the pair pleaded guilty to sending the menacing tweets, admitting they were among the users of 86 separate Twitter accounts from which Ms Criado-Perez had received abusive messages.

Passing sentence at Westminster Magistrates Court, Judge Riddle said that both victims had suffered substantially as a result of the abuse.

He said Ms Criado-Perez had faced "panic, fear and horror" adding that she feared the "abusers would find her and carry out the threats. She felt hunted."

She responded to the sentencing on Twitter, saying: "I feel immensely relieved that the judge clearly has understood the severity of the impact this abuse has had on me." She said the compensation would be given to charity.

Of Ms Creasy the judge said: "She became concerned for her safety to the extent that she had to alter her behaviour. She had a panic button installed in her home."

As he passed sentence Sorley shook her head and looked to the floor while Nimmo stared straight ahead, showing no emotion.

Sean Caulfield, defending Sorley, told the court his client was "articulate and intelligent" and there was "disconnect" between her and the person that sent the messages.

He said they were sent in a half-hour window between 2.25am and 2.55am last July 30 when she was under the influence of alcohol and she was "horrified and appalled" at what she had done.

The court also heard how she had 25 previous convictions, mostly for being drunk and disorderly but she had also been convicted twice of assaulting police.

At the time of the Twitter abuse last summer Ms Criado-Perez was leading an ultimately successful campaign to have women featured on British banknotes.

Police launched an investigation after both she and Walthamstow MP Ms Creasy complained about the vile tweets.

Sorley used Twitter to tell Ms Criado-Perez to "f*** off and die you worthless piece of crap", "go kill yourself" and "rape is the last of your worries".

She also deluged Ms Criado-Perez with menacing messages claiming that she had just been released from prison, writing: "I will find you and you don't want to know what I will do when I do, you're pathetic, kill yourself before I do."

Sorley, from Newcastle upon Tyne, has a 2:1 degree in creative advertising from Leeds College of Art and was working in an Asda supermarket in Newcastle at the time. She has since lost her job.

Unemployed Nimmo told Ms Criado-Perez to "shut up bitch" and "Ya not that gd looking to rape u be fine" followed by "I will find you (smiley face)".

In an attack on Ms Creasy, Nimmo, from South Shields, said:"The things I cud do to u (smiley face)", calling her "Dumb blond bitch."

Ms Creasy responded to Nimmo's message of "Dumb blonde bitch" with the message "That's dumb Dr blonde bitch to you".

"Love it at least u can have a laugh," Nimmo responded, to which Ms Creasy said: "I'm not having a laugh, I'm cataloguing your vile conduct #takebacktwitter".

In court his solicitor Paul Kennedy described him as a "recluse and sad individual" adding that he had no previous convictions and was sorry for what he did.

Sorley's brother, who was in court with two holdalls carrying her belongings in the hope his sister would not be jailed, left without making any comment.

Before the early hearing, Sorley posted a picture of herself on her Twitter page posing outside Buckingham Palace with the message "just chilling at the queens".

Ukraine: Barricades Burn As Concessions Fail

Sporadic clashes between police and protesters have spread across Ukraine despite President Viktor Yanukovych announcing concessions to demonstrators to try to restore calm to the country.

Mr Yanukovych offered to reshuffle his government and to grant an amnesty to dozens of activists arrested during weeks of rioting that has left four protesters dead and dozens of police injured.

But within hours of his offer, the sky in Kiev was filled with black smoke as protesters set fire to barricades built with bags of ice, car tyres and furniture as opposition leader and former heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko said only Mr Yanukovych's resignation would mollify the protests.

Protesters wearing ski masks and armed with sticks hurled firebombs, rocks and fireworks at riot police while officers retaliated with tear gas and baton charges in a repeat of violent scenes earlier in the week that subsided after Mr Yanukovych began talks aimed at a truce.

"We will force the authorities to respect us," 27-year-old protester Artur Kapelan said. "Not they, but we will dictate the conditions of a truce."

The rallies in Kiev began in November last year after Mr Yanukovych scrapped a treaty with the European Union in favour of a bailout loan from Russia, following lobbying by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Political activists began by calling for stronger unification with Europe rather than a new alliance with Russia but the protests have since evolved to call for Mr Yanukovych's resignation and the scrapping of harsh anti-protest legislation.

The fighting stopped earlier in the week after opposition and religious leaders began talking with Mr Yanukovych to find a political solution to the unrest.

The protest map tweeted by Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt

The president had offered to meet some of their demands as thousands of protesters laid siege to government buildings in several cities in the country.

But Mr Klitschko declared the protests would continue until Mr Yanukovuch offers to resign.

Reporting from Kiev, Sky's Katie Stallard said the protesters intend to hold their ground.

"The protesters insist the police fired first, they say that means this truce is off and they're returning fire with whatever they can find.

"They're sending fireworks up to the police lines and throwing Molotov cocktails towards them. The police lines are 40 metres in front of them, (the protesters) are up on top of burnt-out buses and waving the national flag.

"All the time tyres are being taken through to put on these flames. They're trying to build up as much smoke as they can to obscure their view.

"Behind them there are hundreds more here cheering them on behind the barricades, beating on whatever they can find. They're shouting 'glory to Ukraine' and they're determined to hold their ground."

Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt suggested Mr Yanukovych was losing control over his country. He posted a map of Ukraine on Twitter showing which regions had succumbed to protests.

"If Kiev regime tries a military solution to this situation, it will be very bloody and it will fail," he tweeted.

Exclusive: Dieudonne Breaks Silence On Quenelle

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 24 Januari 2014 | 10.03

The French comedian who invented the controversial 'quenelle' gesture used by Nicolas Anelka has said he is "proud" of the footballer.

In his first TV interview since Anelka's actions sparked the furore, Dieudonne M'bala M'bala exclusively told Sky News' Paul Harrison that neither he nor the West Bromwich Albion striker were racist or anti-Semitic.

"Nicolas Anelka has all my support, that's evident," he said.

"We see him as a brother in our humanity. He's someone who is very courageous and for whom I have very much respect and admiration.

The quenelle has been described as an "inverted Nazi salute" and photographs have emerged of people performing it outside the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and at Holocaust memorials around the world.

Dieudonne said: "There's no hint of racism, racism is a bad thing.

"The quenelle was at the start an insult, a little like this, I'm not sure how you do it in England (performs 'up yours' gesture).

"In France, it's a gesture against the system."

He added that the use of the quenelle was linked to the history of slavery that affected his and Anelka's ancestors.

"Nicolas Anelka and I, we are French of African origin and this salute is a gesture of emancipation," he said.

"Anelka is a descendant of slaves and if he wants to remark on this history then he has the right to - and we are all very proud of him doing so.

Nicholas Anelka celebrates scoring a goal Anelka used the gesture during his side's 3-3 draw with West Ham

"We are all behind him in solidarity  and we are above all proud of him because of his noble position. To us, he is a prince."

Anelka has been charged by the Football Association with making an "abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper" gesture and faces a minimum five-game ban.

On Thursday, he denied the charge and requested a personal hearing to defend his case.

But he has repeatedly insisted he used it while celebrating a goal against West Ham United to show his support for Dieudonne, who has consistently claimed it is intended to be an anti-Zionist and anti-establishment gesture.

Anelka's case initially appeared to have been backed by Roger Cukierman, head of Jewish organisation CRIF (Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions) and vice-president of the World Jewish Congress.

He told French newspaper Le Figaro the quenelle is only anti-Semitic when it is performed at a Jewish site.

"In a place that has no significance for Jews, it is merely an anti-establishment gesture which I feel does not warrant any harsh sanction," he said.

But in a statement on the CRIF website, Mr Cukierman clarified his earlier views and said he was disappointed by Anelka's actions.

"The quenelle is a Nazi salute reversed, there's no doubt in my mind because this is the will of the one who created and popularised it for purely ideological ends," he said.

"My statements in Le Figaro are no denial or renunciation on this subject, despite the interpretations that were made.

"However, I wished, perhaps too quickly, to demonstrate that it was important to show discernment, restraint, to avoid being drawn into a spiral that was difficult to control.

"It is clear the gesture of the quenelle has dangerously spread among our citizens and especially youth.

"Should we be hard on them? Definitely, as it glorifies crime against humanity, but we must also teach the youth who are manipulated by Dieudonne and his followers.

"This is why I was disappointed with the attitude of Anelka, whose behaviour is the opposite of what a top athlete must show the youth of our country."

Justin Bieber Leaves Jail After DUI Charge

Justin Bieber has left jail after being bailed on charges including driving under the influence of drink or drugs and resisting arrest.

The teenage pop star was earlier stopped by Miami police after apparently drag racing where he was clocked in a rented yellow Lamborghini doing around 60mph in a 30mph zone.

Bieber admitted he had been drinking, smoking marijuana and taking prescription medication, police say.

He was arrested and taken to jail from where he made his first court appearance via videolink.

He was also charged with driving with an expired licence and bail was set by a judge at $2,500 (£1,500).

After he was released from jail, Bieber, wearing a hooded black top, sat on top of a waiting SUV for a few seconds and waved to his fans.

Bieber failed a sobriety test during his arrest, authorities claimed, and he swore at officers when he was stopped, according to a copy of the arrest report.

An officer claimed the Canadian singer had "bloodshot eyes" and added he could smell alcohol on his breath.

Police said two SUVs had blocked the road in a residential area of Miami Beach so the 19-year-old star could race a friend, identified as R&B singer Khalil Sharieff, who was driving a rented Ferrari.

Miami Dade state attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told Sky News: "We take cases like this very seriously. It could have been the recipe for a tragedy."

Bieber told police he was returning from a studio recording session and repeatedly asked why he had been stopped and arrested.

"Why did you stop me?" he asked, according to the report. "Why do you have to search me?"

Speaking at a press conference, Miami Beach Chief of Police Raymond Martinez said the singer had resisted arrest although he had done so "without violence".

Mr Martinez said the 19-year-old Canadian had been "belligerent" and had used some "choice words" when he was arrested.

He said Bieber had been very cooperative once he got to the station.

The star, who reportedly earned $58m (£35m) last year, arrived at Miami-Dade County Jail where he had his mugshots and fingerprints taken.

The van transporting the singer, with blacked-out windows, was trailed by squad cars.

Miami-Dade Police spokesman Sergeant Bobby Hernandez told WSVN in South Florida that officers saw two cars racing at 4.09am.

Mr Hernandez said two vehicles apparently had been used to block off an area on Pine Tree Drive and 26th Street for the race.

He said the second car was a red Ferrari, and that the driver, Khalil, was also arrested. Khalil was later charged with driving under the influence, and his bail was set at $1,000 (£600). Both cars were towed away.

Bieber was pictured in the car with a woman, named in some reports as model Chantel Jeffries, in the driving seat before his arrest.

The teenager has been in Florida for the past few days and has been spotted in nightclubs and at a skate park.

He posted photos on Instagram of him performing tricks on his skateboard and spraying his initials onto a wall at the park.

He is also alleged to have spent thousands of dollars at a strip club called the King of Diamonds.

A first conviction could bring a fine of between $250 (£150) and $1,000 (£600), depending on the level of alcohol, as well as community service and possibly a jail sentence.

Bieber's arrest comes just a week after the singer's California home was raided by police over claims he pelted his neighbour's house with eggs, causing thousands of dollars of damage.

In that case, authorities arrested one member of Bieber's entourage, rapper Lil Za, on suspicion of drug possession.

Last year the singer disappointed thousands of fans in the UK by showing up to gigs late, which left many of his young followers having to leave his performances only moments after he started performing to catch trains home.

He was also involved in a scuffle outside his hotel in London during his colourful visit.

Lib Dems Suspend Hancock After Sex Claims Leak

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 23 Januari 2014 | 10.03

By Jon Craig, Chief Political Correspondent

Liberal Democrat embarrassment over sex allegations has deepened after a veteran MP had his membership of the party suspended.

With civil war in the Lib Dems already over Lord Rennard, the party was accused of a second cover-up over accusations against 67-year-old Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock.

Mr Hancock was accused of serious sexual misconduct towards a woman who went to see him for help back in 2009.

The MP, who has always denied acting improperly or unlawfully, has been sitting as an independent in the Commons since June last year but had remained a Lib Dem councillor in Portsmouth.

Lord Rennard allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards women Lord Rennard has faced sexual harrassment claims

But after allegations of a cover-up by the city council's ruling Lib Dems over their refusal to publish a QC's report into the allegations, party headquarters in London acted and announced his suspension from the party.

The council opposed calls from Conservative and Lib Dem councillors to publish the report at a council meeting this week, claiming it would be inappropriate ahead of a civil court case brought by Mr Hancock's accuser being heard this Friday.

But in a U-turn after the report was leaked to Sky News and other news organisations, a Lib Dem spokesman said: "The Liberal Democrats have this afternoon, for the first time, had sight of a Portsmouth City Council report by Nigel Pascoe QC into allegations of sexual impropriety by Mike Hancock.

"Mike Hancock resigned as a Liberal Democrat MP last year in order to contest allegations of sexual impropriety in a High Court civil action. Given Nigel Pascoe QC's conclusions in his report, we have immediately suspended Mike Hancock's membership of the party."

Those conclusions began with Mr Pascoe saying he had no doubt that the complainant had provided "compelling prima facie evidence of serious and unwelcome sexual behaviour" carried out towards her by Mr Hancock.

He described the woman as "a straightforward and vulnerable person, angry and hurt by what she said had happened to her".

He also acknowledged that Mr Hancock was not motivated "solely by sexual desire" and that he had sought to help her "wholly properly" as a local councillor.

He concluded: "That said, I consider that the prima facie evidence of his unwelcome sexual approaches remains unquestionably a very serious matter in the light of the position which he holds and his knowledge from the beginning of the vulnerability of (the complainant).

"No one in public life should allow themselves to act in such an irresponsible and damaging way."

In a new statement posted on the MP's website, a spokesman for Mr Hancock said: "These matters have twice been looked at by the police, first in 2010, and in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service, they have found that there is no case for Mr Hancock to answer and have taken no further action."

But Donna Jones, leader of the Conservative group on Portsmouth City Council, said Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has been prompted to act against Mr Hancock after doing nothing for months because of the controversy over Lord Rennard.

Earlier Mr Clegg admitted on his LBC radio show that his handling of the Rennard crisis had "not been ideal".

Both sides in the row are now desperately trying to resolve the dispute over Lord Rennard's future in the party without it going to court.

'Second-Rate Care' For Heart Attack Patients

By Thomas Moore, Health and Science Correspondent

Thousands of heart attack patients have died unnecessarily due to "econd-rate care", according to new research.

The startling analysis shows that patients in the UK are far less likely than those in Sweden to survive a heart attack.

The doctors behind the study warn the finding is a "cause for concern" and called on the NHS to adopt proven life-saving techniques.

Professor Harry Hemingway and colleagues at the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research at University College London tracked the care and outcomes for more than 500,000 people suffering heart attacks between 2004 and 2010 in the two countries.

Sweden was chosen because it is the only other country with comprehensive records as good as those kept by the NHS.

Death rates within 30 days of the heart attack were more than a third higher in the UK than in Sweden.

Professor Hemingway told Sky News that the mortality difference over the seven year study was "alarming".

"We estimate that about 11,000 deaths would have been delayed or prevented if the patients had been managed in Sweden," he said.

"That is a big difference and it's concerning."

According results published in The Lancet medical journal, just 22% of UK patients had a "primary angioplasty", a procedure that unblocks heart arteries with a balloon - ideally within minutes of arriving in hospital. In Sweden the figure is 59%.

And in the UK, 78% of patients are prescribed recommended drugs such as beta-blockers when they are discharged, compared to 89% in Sweden.

Professor Hemingway said the NHS must be far quicker at adopting new treatments and technologies.

Some patients do get rapid treatment.

Bhupen Mistry survived his heart attack because of slick treatment from London Ambulance and then cardiologists at Hammersmith Hospital.

Just half an hour after dialling 999 he'd had a tube called a stent implanted to restore blood flow.

"The minute the stent was put in and inflated I felt an immense calming," he said.

"I felt my heart rate come down. I felt a lot more comfortable than the 30 minutes previously."

NHS England said improvements are being made.

National Clinical Director for cardiac care, Professor Huon Gray, said: "The advanced treatment patients now receive in the UK means heart attack death rates have fallen from one in four in the 1970s, to one in 20 now, but we know more needs to be done and we are working hard to further improve survival rates."

Syria: Brutal Photos 'Are Evidence Of Torture'

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 22 Januari 2014 | 10.03

Syria is facing fresh war crimes allegations after "clear evidence" of the "systematic torture and killing" of up to 11,000 people was published.

The claims were made by a group of top international lawyers, who were handed 55,000 images of dead prisoners.

The lawyers, who are all former war crimes prosecutors, said the photographs showed emaciated corpses with severe injuries and would support findings of crimes against humanity by Bashar al Assad's regime.

Some detainees appeared to have been beaten, strangled or electrocuted, they claimed.

One of the report's authors, Professor David Crane, has told Sky News that the evidence is strong enough to prosecute Mr Assad himself.

Ligature marksLigature marks Photos appeared to show Syrian detainees with ligature marks on their necks

"Within the international criminal law community we have Assad and his generals, whoever they may be, and we can actually hold them liable ... as if they had committed the crimes themselves. This is a solid case," said Professor Crane.

"It characterises the mindset of President Assad and his regime towards his own people.

"This was industrialised killing. This was a killing machine. It was systematic and it ground on for over two years."

The report draws on evidence smuggled out of Syria by an ex-military policeman, known only as Caesar.

He was described as a "truthful and credible witness" by the inquiry team, who said he was "carefully interviewed" and showed "no signs of being sensational".

Caesar told the inquiry team he was asked to take photographs of numbered corpses - a demand that is "wholly consistent with the need of the regime to ensure that orders for the killing of persons in detention facilities had been carried out", according to the report.

"The need to photograph those who were killed is a strong pointer to the fact that the killings were systematic, ordered and directed from above," it added.

Mr Assad, who describes opponents to his regime as "terrorists", previously rejected claims that his troops have killed civilians.

Bashar al Assad speaks during an interview in Damascus Syrian President Bashar al Assad denies his regime has massacred civilians

"These organisations do not have a single document to prove that the Syrian government has committed a massacre against civilians anywhere," he said.

"The army does not shell neighbourhoods. The army strikes areas where there are terrorists."

The report, which was commissioned by Qatar, one of the main supporters of the Syrian opposition, was released the day before crucial peace talks in Switzerland.

The so-called Geneva II conference begins on Wednesday in the Swiss lakeside city of Montreux, where representatives from nearly 40 regional and world powers will be seeking an end to the civil war in Syria.

Members of the Syrian government as well as the Western-backed opposition have arrived for the talks.

The peace conference will be the first face-to-face meetings between the two sides since the crisis began in March 2011.

But Iran, an Assad ally, will not be present at the talks after its invitation was withdrawn by the UN less than 24 hours after it was issued.

British Foreign Minister William Hague meets with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the beginning of their bilateral meeting at the United Nations in New York Mr Hague and Mr Zarif (pictured last year) spoke on the phone on Tuesday

On the eve of the conference, Foreign Secretary William Hague told Parliament that Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon had been right to withdraw the invitation because of Tehran's refusal to declare its support for a transitional government in Syria.

Mr Hague said Iran's involvement in any future peace settlement would be "extremely important", saying it needed to urgently rethink its Syria policy.

He spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on the phone after making his comments, telling him that the idea of brokering a transitional government by mutual consent was the way to end the conflict in Syria and that Britain remained open to working with Iran on that basis in future.

Flood Victims Demanding More Protection

By Frazer Maude, Sky News Reporter

Flood victims across the country are hoping for reassurances that more will be done to prevent a repeat of their recent problems, as those responsible for defences are quizzed in Parliament today.

None more so than the people of Muchelney, the village on the Somerset Levels that has now been cut off for three weeks.

The only way in and out of the picturesque and historic hamlet is by boat, and for the residents here the novelty, and their patience, is wearing thin.

Most of the villagers think the severe flooding here in recent weeks, and in November 2012, has been due to the rivers around the Somerset Levels not being dredged, a practice that was stopped because of the expense involved.

"It's not rocket science," says resident Paul Belding.

"If you let the rivers silt up to half their size, it'll have a massive impact, and dredging is the only way ahead.

"Eighteen years ago the dredgers were out in force in this area. I haven't seen them since."

Flooding in Muchelney in Somerset The village of Muchelney has been cut off to road traffic

Defra Minister Dan Rogerson and Environment Agency chief executive Paul Leinster will today face questions from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.

The thousands of people affected by the floods will be hoping the meeting will prompt some positive action.

Retired doctors Peter and Elizabeth Nightingale now own a smallholding in the village of Muchelney Ham.

They were flooded for the first time in almost 90 years in 2012, and there is still a foot or more of water still in their home after it flooded again this year.

The couple have around 60 sheep that should have been sold at market in the past couple of weeks, but they simply can't get them there.

"The place is a disaster zone. It's ridiculous in a first world country that the Government doesn't do more to help us and protect us from this sort of thing. It's laughable really," says Mr Nightingale.

"This needs a major effort by the government, not just bits of spending here and there."

Many of the local pumping stations on the Levels are not in use at the moment, because with the rivers still full, there is nowhere for the water to go.

Mikaeel Kular: Mother Charged With His Murder

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 21 Januari 2014 | 10.03

Mikaeel Kular: A Timeline Of Events

Updated: 6:01pm UK, Monday 20 January 2014

The disappearance of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular, from Edinburgh, sparked a major police investgation and search. Here is a timeline of events leading to the discovery of the three-year-old's body:

Thursday, January 16

:: 0900: Police Scotland launch a search for Mikaeel after his mother reports him missing. She tells police she last saw him when she put him to bed at around 9pm the night before, but when she went to wake him at around 7.15am, he was not in his bedroom at their home in Ferry Gait Crescent.

:: 1020: Police release a photograph of the missing boy. He is described as being of Asian appearance and possibly wearing a beige hooded jacket, brown Clarks' shoes and pyjamas.

:: 1055: Police Scotland superintendent Liz McAinsh tells reporters there is no evidence to suggest "criminality" at this stage, but officers are "keeping an open mind". One of the possibilities is he left his home of his own accord, and so local residents are urged to look in their own homes, gardens, sheds, parks and lock-ups. The boy's mother is said to be "distraught".

:: 1320: Police activity is reported in the Waterfront Gait area of the city and a man is detained by police. It is not connected to the search for Mikaeel.

:: 1430: Coastguard and lifeboat teams search the shoreline in the Cramond and Drylaw area. Local residents and volunteers join the search for the missing boy, with a police helicopter already in action and specialists with sniffer dogs and mountain rescue teams deployed on the ground. Forensic teams continue to examine his home.

:: 1600: Police Scotland issue a Child Rescue Alert which is usually reserved for abduction and kidnap cases and supported by all police forces across the UK. A dedicated hotline - 0300 200 0200 - is also set up.

:: 1630: Concerns grow for the youngster who Supt McAinsh says may be out wandering the streets "cold, hungry and disorientated" as darkness falls and the temperature drops. Police issue an updated description of Mikaeel, saying that he may also be wearing black gloves with multi-coloured fingers, dark navy blue jogging bottom and a grey pyjama top with an embroidered turquoise dinosaur on the chest. He also has a faded scar on the bridge of his nose and a sore on the left hand side of his mouth.

:: 2100: Police Scotland release a new image of Mikaeel which shows him in the beige jacket he is believed to have been wearing when he disappeared. The search continues through the night.

Friday January 17

:: 0700: Supt McAinsh makes a fresh appeal for help to find the child and says there has been a "fantastic" response from the public with some 150 calls made to the hotline.

:: 1000: Hundreds of people gather at the North Neighbourhood Centre in West Pilton Gardens to help search for Mikaeel.

:: 1030: A missing person appeal for Mikaeel is published on digital billboards across the UK, with adverts adverts shown in areas such as train stations and shopping centres.

:: 1345: A "potential sighting" at 8.30am on Thursday in West Pilton Gardens, Edinburgh, is investigated. The child matches Mikaeel's description, in all but the fact that he is wearing a hat, police say. But it is not confirmed as the missing boy. Volunteers including firefighters and mothers pushing prams take part in a search of the shore at Cramond, in north-west Edinburgh.

:: 1745: Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham says there have been no confirmed sightings of Mikaeel and police are exploring whether his disappearance may be the result of a "criminal act", but adds officers are also still looking at whether he could have left his home of his own accord. He says all immediate family members have been traced and spoken to by police, and a timeline of Mikaeel's movements before his disappearance established. Supt McAinsh reveals Mikaeel has not been at nursery since the Christmas break because he has been ill.

:: 2030: Police thank the more than 200 volunteers who helped during the day, and the search continues into the night.

Saturday January 18

:: 0110: Police convene a sudden news conference and reveal that a body believed to be that of Mikaeel was found shortly before midnight in Fife. Mr Graham confirms that a person has been detained in connection with the death and Mikaeel's family informed.

:: 2300: Mr Graham confirms a 33-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with Mikaeel's death and will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, January 20.

Monday January 20

:: 1600 approx: Mikaeel's mother, Rosdeep Adekoya, appears at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a private hearing. She is charged with murder, attempting to defeat the ends of justice, and is remanded in custody. She enters no plea or declaration.

Lord Rennard Threatens Action Over Suspension

Lord Rennard Statement In Full

Updated: 3:00pm UK, Monday 20 January 2014

It is impossible to describe how enormously distressed I am by this situation and I am certainly too ill to attend the House of Lords today.

In the interests of my party and all concerned, I will now release a statement that I have prepared:

In 2009, I was the subject of a smear campaign in relation to House of Lords allowances. The timing of this campaign was clearly chosen as it was in the middle of major election campaigns, for which I was then responsible. I warned Nick Clegg how I considered that the party might be damaged in those elections as a result of those allegations. I said that I would bring forward my planned resignation as the Liberal Democrats Chief Executive on health grounds. I had not intended resigning until after helping Nick and the party through the 2010 General Election campaign.

I worked for the party professionally for 27 years, I helped it to recover from many crises, helped to win 13 parliamentary by-elections and triple the number of Liberal Democrat MPs at Westminster. But the lifestyle involved did great damage to my health. I was diagnosed as a diabetic in 1994, my control was very poor and by 2007 I was warned that I was entering a high risk zone for a stroke or heart attack.

I explained that health grounds were the reason for resigning. Despite having helped many of my friends in the party and all of the Leaders with 'crisis management', I could not handle my own. I was suffering severe stress, anxiety and depression as I have done much of my life. I did not cite this publicly as I considered this to be a private matter and I knew that it would produce very damaging headlines for the party. I know how much of the media behave, and there would have been 'Stressed and depressed Lib Dem Chief Quits' headlines in the middle of major elections. It was clear to me then that the smear campaign was run by people with personal grudges against me. I was exonerated by the House of Lords authorities in relation to allowances in October 2009.

During the 2010 General Election, I was again subjected to more personal allegations. The depth of depression that I felt and the consideration of self harm is difficult to describe so I will not do so. I was assured by the party that nobody was making any complaints against me. But at least two women were subject to some media pressure in an attempt to persuade them to make allegations. Immediately after the General Election, I offered to meet them with the Party President at the time, Baroness Scott, to understand what may have upset them and to seek some closure of any issue. I was given the response to my offer to meet. I was told that neither woman wanted to make any complaint or have any action taken. One woman refused to meet. One agreed to meet at a later date. When I did meet her in January 2011, I made it clear that I did not know what had upset her, but said that, "if there is anything that I have ever said or done that caused you any harm or embarrassment in any way, then that was not my intention." We did not discuss what may have caused this upset at any point, but my expression in front of Baroness Scott, was clearly accepted. This acceptance was repeated later in the day when I received two text messages from the person saying "you are not a bad man" and that "I should not suffer any period of 'purdah' as a result of allegations made. We continued the friendly relationship that we have always had.

I had been told by the party previously (2008) that there were questions by some of the media about inappropriate behaviour' being made. I was never given any names of potential complainants by the party, or told of any complaints (indeed I was assured then that nobody wanted to complain). I said that I had never acted inappropriately and would certainly not want to cause anyone any embarrassment. I felt, however, that the 'whispering campaign' from those bearing personal grudges against me meant that my role in the 2010 General Election was limited (at some cost to the party) and I did not help the AV referendum campaign in any significant way.

I heard no more until autumn 2012 when it appeared that a parliamentary by-election in Eastleigh was a distinct possibility. I was involved in some of the essential preparations for the campaign. Shortly after Chris Huhne resigned, I was told that people from Channel 4 were investigating allegations against me and it was clear that I could not help the campaign any further. A broadcast was made on February 21st 2013, which was exactly a week before the most important parliamentary by-election of the Parliament. One of the people featured went to the police with her allegations on the eve of poll of the by-election. I was subjected to a humiliating trial by media and a 'lynch mob' mentality from some in the party who knew none of the facts. I tried to protect my party by making only the short, written statements that crisis management required and giving no interviews. Ann and I stayed in hiding for some weeks whilst family friends, and in particular, Alex Carlile QC supported us.

The only communication to me from the party was simply to send me a copy of a complaint form showing that two women were now seeking my expulsion from the party. This was soon overtaken by news that the party were talking to the Metropolitan Police, who would undertake an investigation to see if any 'criminal activity' had taken place. At no stage did the party, or anyone from Nick Clegg's office, ask me for any of my evidence or comments on these matters.

I was shocked to have become the subject of a seven month police inquiry. Whilst I was never arrested, I had to be interviewed under caution. My discussions with the Police provided me with the first opportunity I had ever had to refute the basis of the allegations against me. I was interviewed in June and had to wait until late September when I was actually told by the BBC that there would be no charges. The Police had confirmed with my solicitor Richard Cannon that there would be no charges, that this was a Police decision and that no file of evidence had been given to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The party headquarters did not communicate with me about the Police decision, seek to ask why the Metropolitan Police had come to such a clear conclusion, or even express any relief that I would not be charged with a criminal offence. Before I could make a press statement, the party issued their own saying that their internal investigation into whether I should be expelled would now resume. The party had issued a series of e-mails to all party members saying that I was accused of 'serious allegations of sexual assault'.

Fortunately, I was familiar with the rules of the English Party's complaints procedures which were introduced in 2008. There were various attempts to change these rules, but with the help of Alex Carlile, I was able only with the threat of legal action to say that the inquiry should begin as prescribed in the rules.

I formally offered mediation in October 2013 as a route forward via the Independent Investigator. This was completely rejected by the 'complainants'.

I then felt threatened and bullied by wild rumours that there were many people who would complain against me. I felt that I was being urged to resign my party membership of 40 years on the basis of these rumours.

Following public calls for evidence, when the deadline for receiving complaints passed (November 22nd 2013), I was made aware of complaints from three women (including the woman who had accepted an apology two years previously). This was of course a smaller number of complaints than the number of women who gave interviews to Channel 4 News last February attacking me All the publicity did not result in a single complaint, other than those featured in the Channel 4 programme.

I submitted my evidence which strongly refuted what had been alleged. I had many very powerful evidential and character statements in support of my case. I then waited for the conclusion of the Independent Investigator. Under the rules only two possible conclusions are allowed at this stage. Either the investigator must say that there should be 'No Further Action' (as the Metropolitan Police did) or charges must be listed and then subjected to a hearing. The report must be given to just two people, the chair of the party body responsible, and to the person complained of.

I waited for the report to which I was entitled. Alex Carlile QC on my behalf consistently pressed for disclosure of the report to me, as the affected individual. I waited for two days to see it. Then I was informed indirectly by telephone that the party had decided not to accept it, which is against the rules for an independent investigation. I believe that that report concluded that 'there should be no further action' and it should have been given to me. The party decided to allow a further complaint to be admitted after the deadline had passed and which had been extended already. I then responded with my evidence to the fourth complainant (who had initially refused to assist the inquiry). Alex Carlile described some of my evidence obtained by research to be 'devastating'. The party should have done this sort of research a year ago. Assessing the fourth complaint clearly did not change the outcome of the independent inquiry's conclusion as it was again a 'No further action' conclusion.

Last Wednesday, I should have been given a copy of the report. Instead I was told that the party had advice that they could not do so under the Data Protection Act. This is strange since the rules have been in place since 2008; many bodies including Parliament publish reports of this kind and any personal data could have been redacted. I did not ask for the report to be published. I simply asked to be given it, as required by the rules. I have been advised firmly that there is no legal basis for refusing me a copy of the report in appropriately confidential circumstances.

I was informed by Alistair Webster QC at 11 am last Wednesday morning that the conclusion was 'No Further Action'. He went on to say that there would be a press statement accompanying this saying that I should consider an apology and that some of the evidence against me was credible. He told me that the words accompanying the 'No Further Action' statement were not his responsibility and that if I objected to them, then I had to take this up with the party and not with him. I had made the offer to the party to co-ordinate and agree responses to the report's conclusion (whatever it was) in advance. This offer was not taken up. Mr Webster was advised that the proposed press statement in his name was entirely inappropriate.

I immediately rang Lord Newby, the Lib Dem Chief Whip in the House of Lords, and told him that there would be a major problem if I was asked to do something that I could not do. My legal advice was that, apart from anything else, any apology would leave me defenceless in a future civil action. I believed that this would follow and could then result in my being expelled from the party after all. In any event, I made it clear to Lord Newby that any apology for something that I had not done was not appropriate and could not be accepted by me.

I explained this carefully to Dick Newby who said that there was little that he could do to persuade anyone to change the wording. It then emerged that both Nick Clegg and Tim Farron would issue further statement along similar lines. I did everything that I possibly could in the short time available to say that I should have the report, that I could not apologise and it would be most unwise to demand this.

I did however at the end of the meeting confirm that I was resuming the Lib Dem Whip in the House of Lords at that point, having in the interests of the party voluntarily stood aside from it, pending the conclusion of all inquiries. Dick confirmed that I was re-admitted and we shook hands.

I made my statement last Wednesday, which criticised nobody at all, and there the matter should have rested.

On Friday, I offered the party a way out. The four complainants announced that they would appeal against the conclusion of the inquiry. I suggested that the party should simply recognise that you cannot be expected to apologise when an appeal has been launched.

I am a Democrat, as well as a Liberal, and I believe that Conservative attempts to change parliamentary boundaries in their favour and change the voting registration to deny many people the vote could have resulted in permanent Conservative government for this country. I was happy to work with Nick Clegg to prevent this. My work for the Liberal Democrats over many years helping to win seats for the party, together with Nick Clegg's brilliant performance in the General Election, prevented a Conservative majority in 2010.

I have not spoken to, met with, or heard from Nick Clegg in eleven months. I would ask him, now that he has more knowledge of the facts, to ask for any threat to me to be withdrawn and to insist that I see the report, to which I am entitled, and to let me help him and my party again in future.

I very much regret the wounds that have opened up within my party because many people have acted without being aware of the facts. I am particularly grateful to my friends and colleagues in the Liberal Democrat group in the House of Lords for much personal support.

I would advise my friends in the party to let the matter rest, as it should have done, with the simple conclusion of the Independent Investigator that there should be no further action.

Courtesy has always been an essential part of my moral compass. If ever I have hurt, embarrassed or upset anyone, then it would never have been my intention and, of course, I regret that they may have felt any hurt, embarrassment or upset. But for the reasons given, I will not offer an apology to the four women complainants. I do not believe that people should be forced to say what they know they should not say, or do not mean.

Ann and I have both been members of the Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrats for over 40 years. Ann has also made great personal sacrifices for the sake of letting me help my party as much as I can. I am of course most grateful to her for sustaining me through this difficult period, together with our families and very many friends in the Liberal Democrats and elsewhere.

Finally, I would like to re-iterate my most grateful thanks also to Alex Carlile QC, who has acted for me as a friend on a pro-bono basis throughout the last year.

I hope that the matter will now be closed by a response to this statement and all threats withdrawn.

Essex Rape: 13-Year-Old Attacked By Five Men

Written By Unknown on Senin, 20 Januari 2014 | 10.03

A teenage girl was so traumatised after being raped by five men that it took her three years before she mentioned the attack, police have said.

An investigation has now been launched by Essex detectives into the assault on the girl, who was just 13 at the time.

An e-fit image of the alleged ringleader has been released to the media.

The attack took place at around 9.30pm on February 24, 2011.

It happened as the girl was walking home along an alleyway between Bardfield Way and Langham Drive in Rayleigh.

She was assaulted by five men, aged between 25 and 35, and dragged to a nearby field where the assault continued, police said.

Detective Constable Danny Cooper said: "This was a terrifying assault by five men on a girl who was aged 13 at the time.

"She was traumatised and remained scared of the men until she found the courage to tell her mother what had happened.

"We want to hear from anyone in the area of the Birds Estate who has any information about this incident or from anyone who can identify the man in the e-fit who was the main perpetrator.

"He is described as being white, between 5ft 8 to 9in tall, with thick dark-coloured eyebrows and pronounced jawline and cheek bones. At the time he had spiked gelled hair."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Mikaeel Kular Neighbours Shocked By News

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 19 Januari 2014 | 10.03

By Kat Storr, Sky Producer, Edinburgh

The hundreds of people who joined the search for missing Mikaeel Kular are now coming to terms with the news they had all been dreading.

After the discovery of a body, people have been leaving flowers, teddies and candles near the three-year-old's home.

Shazia Chaudhry, 33, lives on Ferry Gait Crescent and came to look at the tributes with her 20-month-old son Zohaib.

She said the news had hit her hard because the two boys looked so alike.

She cried as she read the notes to her son, who she told me had earlier looked out of the window and said: "Baby gone."

Student Erin Anderson, 17, wept as she described how she "felt sick" when she found out the news on Twitter.

Shona Smith, 41, came to the crescent with her son Cain, eight, who wanted to leave two of his teddy bears for Mikaeel because he was "only young".

Ms Smith said: "I think it's a hard lesson in life but one that kids needs to understand - these things do happen."

But the Kulars' neighbours, who did not want to be named, said they had sent their three children to stay with relatives because they didn't want them to see everything going on.

Jackie Brownlee, 29, who lives opposite the Kulars' flat, told Sky News: "Everyone was hoping so much and now that hope's gone. We still can't believe it."

And that sentiment was reflected in the notes left with the tributes. One attached to a bunch of flowers just says: "Why??"

Brothers Aron and Tanay Ortanoglu brought their two teddies and wrote a note to Mikaeel saying: "Sleep well with the angels. Hope you like the teddies for you to cuddle in heaven."

Their mother Donna Ortanoglu, 44, said the boys, aged six and nine, had not been out of her sight since news of Mikaeel's disappearance broke.

She said: "I didn't want them to hear stories at school, I wanted them to see the truth."

But it is that truth that this devastated community is going to take a long time to recover from.
