'Cannibal' Death Victim Named By Police

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 08 November 2014 | 10.03

A woman murdered in a South Wales village - in what unconfirmed reports described as a cannibalistic attack - has been named by police.

Sources say 22-year-old Cerys Marie Yemm was pronounced dead at a bed and breakfast in Argoed, in the Valleys, after being found with substantial facial injuries.

Police fired a 50,000-volt Taser at Matthew Williams in an effort to stop his attack, before the 34-year-old man was restrained and arrested.

He later died in custody.

Gwent Police said they were not looking for any other suspects in the murder investigation.

The attack happened at around 1.30am on Thursday at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel, used by Caerphilly Council to house homeless people while they wait for permanent accommodation.

Neighbour Susan Gibbs told Sky News: "We have had a lot of problems up there.

"Every other week, well every other day sometimes, there are police up there."

Leon Gardiner, deputy mayor of the village, 20 miles north of Cardiff, said: "This has hit the community for six."

He told Sky News: "This is the sort of thing you don't ever expect... We've just got to live with it and hope that the hurt goes away - but it will take a long time."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has started its own probe into the suspect's death.

A Gwent Police statement confirmed "a Taser was discharged and a 34-year-old local man was arrested".

It added: "Whilst under arrest, the man became unresponsive. Officers and paramedics administered first aid but he was also pronounced dead at the scene."

UK 'Halves' EU Surcharge, Osborne Says

Britain will pay the European Union £850m of the £1.7bn surcharge it had demanded, Chancellor George Osborne has said.

After meeting European finance ministers in Brussels he said the deal - which means the bill will be paid in two interest-free instalments after next year's election - was "far beyond what anyone expected us to achieve".

"Instead of footing the bill we have halved the bill, we have delayed the bill, we will pay no interest on the bill and if there are any mistakes in the bill we will get our money back," he said.

Critics accused Mr Osborne of resorting to "smoke and mirrors", saying that the reduction had been achieved only by bringing forward a rebate to which the UK would have been entitled anyway.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls said the deal had not saved the UK "a single penny" and accused Mr Osborne and the Prime Minister of "trying to take the British people for fools".

Video: Has Surcharge Really Been Halved?

Prime Minister David Cameron claimed it was a victory for Britain and praised his Chancellor for securing the deal.

Sky's Europe Correspondent Robert Nisbet says it appears the EU will still get the full £1.7bn as a result of what he said some would call "clever accounting".

Nisbet explained: "Next year there will be two instalments that will equal £850m that will be paid to Brussels by the UK and it will get its rebate in full. So far, so good.

"But what will happen in 2016 is that an extra rebate based on increased VAT receipts will be used to settle the rest of the bill.

Video: Cameron: 'Good News' On EU Bill

"That allows the EU to claim it's getting its money, the UK to claim it's negotiated a great deal for Britain and for opposition parties to cry foul."

A Number 10 source insisted there was "no guarantee the rebate would have applied to this" before the deal was struck, and added: "Our view is that this is a very good deal."

However, Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan suggested the devil was in the detail, saying: "The EU sticks us with a bill. Ministers double it, apply the rebate, return to the original figure and claim victory. We're meant to cheer?

"Britain is worse off in absolute terms, but a straw man has been knocked down. A prelude to how the pro-EU side will fight the referendum."

Video: Migrant Movements 'Not Unqualified'

UKIP leader Nigel Farage wrote on Twitter: "Osborne trying to spin his way out of disaster. UK still paying full £1.7 billion, his credibility is about to nose dive."

Mr Osborne said that EU rules would now be changed forever "so this never happens again", claiming he had got his EU counterparts to agree to changing the system for calculating adjustments to member states contributions.

The PM earlier warned there would be a "major problem" if Brussels insisted on Britain paying the bill in full.

Mr Cameron went on the offensive after a meeting with other European leaders in Finland, saying Britain would not pay "anything like" the full amount ahead of a looming 1 December deadline.

The demand was made by Brussels after a recalculation of Britain's gross national income in relation to other EU states.

Has Bacon Butty Ed Miliband Had His Chips?

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 07 November 2014 | 10.03

A Shadow Cabinet ally of Ed Miliband told me defiantly: "It's Westminster nonsense. Bar room b*******!"

The Labour leader himself declared: "This is nonsense. My focus, the Labour Party's focus, is on the country and the things that matter to the country. That's the cost-of-living crisis, it's the NHS, it's the prospects for the next generation."

Ed Balls said it was nonsense, too, and so did the highly influential union powerbroker Paul Kenny of the GMB, who said rather colourfully it was "a couple of unnamed MPs... worried about saving their own rear ends". Nice!

So that's that, then? Well, perhaps. Up to a point.

It seems unlikely that there is a letter circulating yet among Labour MPs, as there was in January 2010 during the botched coup of Geoff "Buff" Hoon and Patricia Hewitt, disgruntled Blairites attempting to topple Gordon Brown.

Video: Balls Denies Miliband Plot Rumours

Some Miliband loyalists blame many of the same disgruntled Blairites this time, claiming they are muttering about Ed because he demoted Mary Creagh in his mini-resuffle and promoted his cronies Michael Dugher and Lucy Powell.

Possibly. But 2010 taught us that Blairites are useless at plots. If you want a successful plot in the Labour Party, it's Gordon Brown's people you need. And most of them are now loyal to Ed Miliband.

But there is dissent and criticism of the Labour leader inside the Parliamentary Labour Party, lots of it. And it isn't just coming from a few fed up Blairites who backed Ed's brother in 2010 and have never accepted his leadership.

And there's plenty to criticise. He dithers in decision making, MPs complain, and surrounds himself with Yes men (there are very few women) in his office and cronies in his inner circle.

His party conference speech was a disaster, leaving out the passages on deficit and immigration, and he bombed in the Scottish referendum campaign. It's claimed his confidence is "shot" since the conference disaster.

Then there have been the dodgy photo-ops and TV images. First was the disastrous bacon butty debacle, then the feminist T-shirt allegedly - although that was disputed - made in a sweatshop and then handing money to a beggar, an attempted kind gesture that backfired.

So has Bacon Butty Ed had his chips? Well, all the criticism will no doubt leave a bitter taste. But Labour's leadership election rules are tortuous - deliberately so to protect party leaders from mutiny - and there isn't an obvious alternative.

Morale among Labour MPs has been falling after sliding opinion poll ratings, showing the party's lead over the Tories gradually disappearing, and in the past fortnight stunning polls from Scotland suggesting the SNP could snatch 20 or more seats from Labour at the general election.

But in the past 24 hours the party has been plunged into total panic by a brutal hatchet job in the Labour-supporting New Statesman magazine, in which its editor dismissed Mr Miliband as an "old-fashioned Hampstead socialist" who "doesn't understand the lower middle classes".

Add to that unnamed MPs giving hostile quotes to papers like The Times and the Daily Mail and you have a full-blown crisis.

Significantly, however, since the New Statesman assault appeared not even the most mutinous or curmudgeonly backbencher has publicly criticised Mr Miliband or called for him to go.

Which means the disloyal comments are indeed mostly bar room talk. For now.

Miliband Dismisses Claims Of Leadership Unrest

Ed Miliband has dismissed claims of unrest about his leadership among Labour backbenchers, describing them as "nonsense".

MPs are understood to be increasingly disgruntled with Mr Miliband's performance with the General Election campaign just around the corner and there have been claims a letter is being circulated calling for him to go.

But speaking during a visit to Northamptonshire, the Labour leader told the BBC: "Honestly, this is nonsense.

"We remain focused on this country and how we can make this country work again."

It comes after shadow chancellor Ed Balls insisted the party is united behind Mr Miliband's leadership.

Video: Labour Party Is 'Dying'

At the weekend a YouGov poll put Mr Miliband at an all-time low in the popularity stakes - behind even Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

On Wednesday he carried out a mini reshuffle, taking advantage of a vacancy created by Jim Murphy quitting the shadow cabinet to stand for Scottish Labour leader to freshen up his team.

The Labour-supporting New Statesman magazine earlier wrote that he was out of touch with ordinary voters.

However, Mr Balls denied a Labour rift and said it was the Conservatives who had been riven by dissent.

He said: "All I know is that everybody in the Labour Party, from Ed Miliband down, is focused on tackling the cost-of-living crisis, building an economy which works for working people, reforming Europe but not walking away, having tough and fair controls on immigration, saving our National Health Service - that's what Labour's for.

"It's the Conservative Party which are riven and divided and defecting left, right and centre. We will focus on Tory division, Labour will stay united."

Another Labour source told Sky News: "We have spent four years being united as a party in a determination to be a one-term opposition.

"We're not going to be distracted by noises-off now."

Another added: "I think the leadership challenge stuff is b*******, mainly because there's not a candidate who would be willing to do it."

Mr Miliband's approval ratings have dropped ever since he was elected leader in September 2010.

There have been occasional bounces, including the energy price freeze announcement at the party conference in 2013, but his ratings were still minus 30 then and it was downhill from there.

Among the notable lows was the "bacon sandwich moment" - when unflattering pictures of him eating were published during the local and European election campaign in May.

Following what has been widely viewed as a disastrous party conference speech in September, during which he forgot to mention the deficit, backbenchers have become more disillusioned with his leadership.

And there was further bad news for Mr Miliband as a recording emerged of shadow Welsh secretary Owen Smith saying the party is "dying" and "needs to be much bolder".

The remarks were made during a fringe event at a conference organised by CLASS - a left-wing think tank.

A Labour spokesperson said: "Anyone who was at the event would know that this comment was a humorous dig at the age of the people attending the fringe meeting and not a comment on the Labour movement. It is ludicrous to twist it in this fashion.‎"

EU Migrants Pay In More Than Take Out - Study

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 05 November 2014 | 10.03

EU immigrants contribute more to the UK in taxes than they receive in benefits and services, according to new research.

But the study showed those arriving from outside Europe over a 17-year-period took more from the public purse than they put back in.

The findings come as David Cameron moves to tighten the UK's immigration controls in the face of the growing popularity of UKIP.

The Prime Minister is aware of the need to calm Tory jitters ahead of this month's crunch by-election in Rochester and Strood, where the party is desperate to prevent a second seat falling to UKIP.

The University College London (UCL) report revealed European immigrants made a positive financial contribution of £4.4bn to the UK between 1995 and 2011.

However, immigrants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) made a negative contribution of £118bn.

Over the same period, UK-born workers made a negative contribution of £591bn.

But the figures improved for more recent arrivals, between 2001 and 2011, with EU immigrants making a positive contribution of £20bn, and those from outside Europe £5bn.

Professor Christian Dustmann, director of UCL's Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (Cream) and co-author of the study, said: "A key concern in the public debate on migration is whether immigrants contribute their fair share to the tax and welfare systems.

"Our new analysis draws a positive picture of the overall fiscal contribution made by recent immigrant cohorts, particularly of immigrants arriving from the EU."

He added: "European immigrants, particularly, both from the new accession countries and the rest of the European Union, make the most substantial contributions.

"This is mainly down to their higher average labour market participation compared with natives and their lower receipt of welfare benefits."

Responding to the report, chairman of the MigrationWatch UK thinktank Sir Andrew Green said: "This report confirms that immigration as a whole has cost up to £150bn in the last 17 years.

"As for recent European migrants, even on their own figures - which we dispute - their contribution to the exchequer amounts to less than £1 a week per head of our population."

Charles In Plea To Muslims Over Christians

Prince Charles has said Muslim leaders must warn their followers about the "indescribable tragedy" of the persecution of Christians in the Middle East.

The heir to the throne has recorded a video message insisting that faith leaders do not remain "silent" over a lack of respect between traditions.

His comments accompany the publication of a new report which concludes that Christians are the "most persecuted religious minority" in the world.

The report, by a Roman Catholic charity, said Muslim countries dominate the list of places where religious freedom is under threat.

It argues that extremism has contributed to a decline in religious freedom in the UK and singles out the corrosive influence of Islamic State (IS).

Video: Sept 15: Special Report UK Jihadis

IS fighters pushed Christians out of Mosul, in northern Iraq, in July - ending a presence that began in the early years of Christianity. Shia Muslims and religious minorities have also been targeted by the Sunni Islamist group.

The report by Aid To The Church In Need also highlights the kidnapping of 200 Christian schoolgirls by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

In his video message, Charles said: "It is an indescribable tragedy that Christianity is now under such threat in the Middle East - an area where Christians have lived for 2,000 years, and across which Islam spread in 700AD, with people of different faiths living together peaceably for centuries.

"It seems to me that our future as a free society - both here in Britain and throughout the world - depends on recognising the crucial role played by people of faith.

"And, of course, religious faith is all the more convincing to those outside the faith when it is expressed with humility and compassion, giving space to others, whatever their beliefs."

Outlining his own suggestions to improve the situation, he said: "First and foremost, rather than remaining silent, faith leaders have, it seems to me, a responsibility to ensure that people within their own tradition respect people from other faith traditions.

Video: Nov 1: Boko Haram 'Marry Off' Girls

"We have yet to see the full potential of faith communities working together."

The report concludes that Christians are suffering the most widespread persecution but also points out that Muslims are coming under "serious" threat.

Charles said he did not want to be seen as Defender of the Faith, the title held by each monarch since Henry VIII, but as Defender of Faith in general.

But he maintained that this conviction was rooted in his own Christian faith.

"My own Christian faith has enabled me to speak to, and to listen to, people from other traditions, including Islam," he said.

Sky's Ashish Joshi said: "The Prince of Wales is no stranger to controversy - this is a highly unusual intervention.

"To record this video for the Roman Catholic charity (...) that will obviously be received as highly controversial in some areas, in some quarters."

The Prince's comments came amid news that a Christian couple had been beaten to death in Pakistan after being accused of desecrating the Koran.

The report, launched in the House of Lords, suggested that the last two years had seen a serious decline in religious freedom in many parts of the world.

As well as the persecution of Christians, it also focuses on the plight of Muslim minorities in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East as well as Asia.

In particular, it highlights the case of the Rohingya group in Burma, facing official restrictions on the number of children families are allowed.

Teacher's Murderer Must Serve 20 Years

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 04 November 2014 | 10.03

A teenager who murdered Leeds school teacher Ann Maguire in front of other pupils showed no emotion as he was handed a minimum of 20 years in custody.

Will Cornick, now 16, had a "deep-seated and irrational hatred" for his Spanish teacher at Corpus Christi College in Leeds.

Ahead of the killing in April, he had also planned to murder two other teachers, including one who was pregnant.

Cornick had previously accepted responsibility for unlawful killing but this morning issued a formal guilty plea to the murder charge at Leeds Crown Court.

Two months before the murder, Cornick sent a message on Facebook which said of Mrs Maguire: "The one absolute f****** bitch that deserves more than death, more than pain and more than anything that we can understand."

He even showed some other pupils the 21cm knife he planned to attack Mrs Maguire with on the day of the murder but "many did not take him seriously", the court heard.

  2. This message reads: 'R.I.P Mrs Maguire. A wonderful teacher and lady! You will be dearly missed.'

  3. 'Miss Maguire. Such happy memories of you as my teacher and head of year in year 11. I am so pleased I got to be head girl during the time you wear head of year 11.'

  4. 'Mrs Maguire. Such a tragedy and so sad to lose you. You taught me more than 20 years ago. You taught my children too. You will be missed by many and more.'

  5. 'Mrs Maguire. Thank you for everything you did for me, I'll never forget it! You were a true inspiration among the whole of the school community! I hope one day I touch as many hearts as you did.'

  6. 'Your presence we will miss, your memories we will treasure, Mrs Maguire we love you and will think of you forever. All my love to you, your family and friends.'

  7. 'Mrs Maguire you were a wonderful teacher, you will be sadly missed. Lots of love.'

  8. 'Mrs Maguire, RIP. A lovely woman, always had a smile and was a wonderful teacher. A pleasure to have known you.'

Prosecutor Paul Greaney QC said the teenager stabbed Mrs Maguire seven times in the neck and back as she leaned over a desk to look at another pupil's work.

When she tried to run away, he chased her.

Another teacher, Susan Francis, saw Mrs Maguire running down a corridor, saying: "He's stabbed me in the neck", with Cornick pursuing her.

The female teacher pushed her colleague into a room and then blocked the door to prevent the boy getting in.

The teacher said that as Mrs Maguire lay injured she spoke about her children and the fact that she was loved.

A paramedic who tried to save her said later that the stab wounds were the worst he had ever seen.

Meanwhile, Cornick went back to the classroom and sat down "as if nothing had happened", Mr Greaney said

Mr Greaney said that Cornick's parents are "decent and responsible" and at a loss to understand what has happened but that the boy was currently "highly dangerous and has psychopathic elements to his personality".

Video: Teacher's Sister: Ann Embraced Life

"That his anger and hatred in fact became focused upon a person as decent and loved as Ann Maguire only makes this more tragic," he added.

Mrs Maguire's husband Don said the "callous cruelty" of the murder "defied comprehension".

He said: "Now all dreams have gone forever - the centre of our lives is missing."

Her daughter Kerry said the murder "has stripped me of my key support in life: my mummy".

The judge said the boy showed a "total and chilling lack of remorse", adding that the teenager's pride in what he did and lack of remorse was "truly grotesque".

He said that the public killing would leave many "traumatised forever" and showed a level of violence which was "savage and cowardly".

But he paid tribute to the boy's parents, who sat in court, and to the "calm dignity" of Mrs Maguire's family.

Outside court, Mrs Maguire's family paid tribute to those who had supported them during "this terrible nightmare".

After the sentencing, the judge lifted an order banning Cornick's identification.

Face Of 'Evil' Teen Killer Will Cornick

The murder of teacher Ann Maguire by one of her pupils was a "monumental act of cowardice and evil", her widower Don has said.

Will Cornick was 15 when he killed the 61-year-old woman as she taught a class at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds in April.

A court heard he winked at another boy before he attacked her from behind, stabbing her seven times in the back and neck as she leaned over a desk to look at a girl's work.

The judge Mr Justice Coulson found Cornick's pride and lack of remorse over his actions "truly grotesque".

Cornick, now 16, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 20 years and was warned he may never be released from custody. An order banning his identification has now been lifted.

Leeds Crown Court heard Cornick repeatedly stabbed Mrs Maguire with a large kitchen knife and also punched her.

Video: Teacher's Sister: Ann Embraced Life

She fled and he pursued her, before a female staff member helped her into a workroom and blocked the door.

The court was told it was clear to witnesses that the teenager was pleased with what he had done and the boy even said "good times" to horrified pupils as he returned to the classroom.

He calmly sat down at a computer and told fellow students: "I stabbed her. Pity she didn't die."

Video: Ann Maguire's Family Pay Tribute

The boy chatted to them "as if nothing had happened", and while in custody he said: "Everything I've done is fine and dandy."

Cornick was described by a psychiatrist as having a "gross lack of empathy for his victim and a degree of callousness rarely seen in clinical practice".

Those who were present when the popular teacher lay dying said she spoke about her children and the fact she was loved.

Video: Police Welcome Sentence For Teen

Students had heard Cornick warn that he was going to attack the Spanish teacher with a knife, but did not take him seriously.

Even when he brandished the 21cm (9in) blade, those present may have been mindful of his earlier warning that he would "kill them" if they told.

One schoolboy who witnessed the attack said he remembered sitting "in absolute panic and shock" as the killer launched his assault.

Video: Psychopaths Violent 'To Feel Alive'

Cornick remained remorseless as he underwent psychiatric assessment.

He discussed having planned the murder for years, saying: "The killing was always on my mind since year eight, the thought of homicide, murdering her."

The teenager had even taken a bottle of Jack Daniels into school on the day of the murder with the intention of "celebrating" his actions.

"I wasn't in shock, I was happy," he later told a psychiatrist.

"I had a sense of pride. I still do."

As the court heard, the fact the boy's family life "was marked by love and support" made his actions all the more "inexplicable".

Suitcase Murder: Briton Appears In HK Court

Written By Unknown on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 10.03

By Mark Stone, Asia Correspondent, in Hong Kong

A British man has appeared in a Hong Kong court on suspicion of murdering two young women - one of whom was discovered inside a suitcase.

Banker Rurik Jutting, 29, was arrested after the bodies were found in an apartment in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district.

Police earlier placed him on a holding charge ahead of his court appearance.

It is understood that police arrived at the apartment in the early hours of Saturday after receiving a call from the suspect, who until recently worked for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Officers arrived to find the body of a woman, aged between 25 and 30, lying naked in the living room with knife wounds to her neck and backside.

  2. Police have been searching the flat where the women's bodies were found

  3. One of the bodies was found hiden in a suitcase on the balcony

  4. Assistant Commander Wan Siu-hung said both victims had injuries to the neck

They also found a small amount of cocaine in the flat.

Assistant Commander Wan Siu-hung told reporters: "We believe the death was caused by a sharp object which cut the throat of the deceased.

"This led to copious bleeding. When the police found her, she was lying in the living room. The room was messy."

Eight hours later, at about noon on Saturday, police widened the forensic examination of the apartment and made the second discovery.

The body of the second woman was found wrapped in a blanket inside a brown suitcase on a balcony at the apartment.

She too had wounds to the neck, and it is believed the victim had been dead "for quite some time".

Police sources have told local media that the second victim is a 25-year-old who they believe worked in the sex industry.

A police spokesman added: "From what we can see it was intentionally hidden because it was put in a travel suitcase."

Video: Hong Kong Victim 'Always Smiling'

Both of the women are believed to be from Indonesia. One has been named locally as 25-year-old Sumarti Ningsih.

Neighbours told Sky News the smell from the apartment on the 31st floor was "horrendous" and had permeated as far down as the 26th floor.

Mr Jutting studied history and law at Cambridge University.

He had worked for Merrill Lynch from 2010 until only a couple of days ago, spending three years at their offices in London before moving to Hong Kong in July last year. Prior to that he worked at Barclays in London.

The neighbourhood of Wan Chai is effectively Hong Kong's red light district. A large number of women from southeast Asia spend time in the district's many bars and clubs.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed a British national had been arrested in Hong Kong, although did not specify the nature of the crime.

"We are in touch with the local police and stand ready to provide consular assistance," she said.

Search Called Off For Two Missing Fishermen

Rescuers have called off the search for two fishermen who went missing after their trawler got into difficulty in the North Sea.

Three of the Ocean Way crew were rescued from the water and airlifted to hospital, but one later died.

The search for the remaining two men was called off on Sunday night, and the coastguard said unless further information was received it is unlikely to resume early today.

It said the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.

A rescue mission was launched for the skipper and crew of the vessel after it began transmitting an emergency beacon about 100 miles east of the Farne Islands.

Helicopters from the UK and Norway were involved in the hunt for the British skipper and his four Filipino crew.

Scotland's Fisheries Minister Richard Lochhead said: "I am very sorry to hear about the loss of the Fraserburgh registered fishing vessel the Ocean Way that has tragically resulted in fatalities.

"This is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts are with the loved ones and friends of the crew.

"This tragedy will be felt by all fishing communities and is a horrible reminder of the dangers our fishermen face day in, day out to bring fish to our tables, with many paying the ultimate sacrifice.

"I would like to pay tribute to all the personnel involved in the rescue operation."

Injured Virgin Pilot 'Alert' After Fatal Crash

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 02 November 2014 | 10.03

The co-pilot who was injured in the Virgin Galactic rocket crash is "alert and talking" to relatives and doctors, his employer has said.

Peter Siebold, 43, was one of two pilots in command of SpaceShipTwo when in crashed during a test flight over California's Mojave Desert on Friday.

He was badly injured after ejecting and parachuting to the ground when the craft suffered what Virgin Galactic called a "serious anomaly".

His employer Scaled Composites said Mr Siebold has begun to communicate with his family at the Antelope Valley Hospital, where he is being treated.

"He is alert and talking with his family and doctors," the company said in a statement.

"We remain focused on supporting the families of the two pilots and all of our employees, as well as the agencies investigating the accident.

"We ask at this time that everyone please respect the privacy of the families."

The company also paid tribute to 39-year-old pilot Michael Alsbury, who was killed in the crash, describing him as a "respected and devoted colleague".

According to his biography on the company's website, Mr Alsbury, from Tehachapi, California, worked as a project engineer and test pilot.

The fatal flight was his ninth onboard SpaceShipTwo.

He served as co-pilot on the spacecraft's first rocket-powered test flight on April 29, 2013, and had logged more than 1,600 hours in Scaled Composites aircraft since joining the company 13 years ago.

Mr Siebold has been identified as the director of flight operations at Scaled Composites.

He is an aeronautical engineer, experimental test pilot, and flight test engineer with 17 years of flight experience.

He has spent 2,000 hours working in 35 different fixed wing aircraft and has been employed by the company since 1996.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the crash, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson said the accident is a "massive setback for commercial space travel".

But he hopes the programme will be back on track within six months. He added that to "push on blindly" with the project without knowing the cause of the crash would be an "insult" to Mr Alsbury.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the accident.

Virgin Galactic had been aiming to become the first commercial "spaceline", by beginning tourist flights to the edge of space next year.

Customers will pay up to $250,000 (£156,000) for a short journey into zero gravity and a glimpse of the planet from the edge of space.

Virgin Galactic Crash A 'Massive Setback'

Sir Richard Branson has admitted the fatal Virgin Galactic crash is a "massive setback for commercial space travel" - but said he hopes the programme will be back on track in six months.

Speaking publicly for the first time following the SpaceShipTwo crash over California's Mojave Desert, the Virgin Group founder said: "It is a horrible day for Virgin Galactic, for commercial space travel - it's a massive setback.

"But we've got to pick ourselves up and see whether the problem is fixable, and hopefully move the programme forward.

"I'm hopeful we'll be able to overcome the problems."

Sir Richard said the programme could be "back on track between four and six months" if the problem proves to be "clear cut".

But he added that to "push on blindly" without knowing the cause would be an "insult" to the pilot who died.

His comments comes as a coroner named the pilot killed in Friday's tragedy as 39-year-old Michael Alsbury.

His co-pilot, Peter Siebold, was badly injured after parachuting to the ground.

The British entrepreneur arrived in the desert on Saturday and described the journey as "one of the most difficult trips I have ever had to make".

"Pushing the bounds of possibility comes with unavoidable risk," he told a news conference.

"We are standing on the shoulders of giants, yesterday we fell short.

"We owe it to the test pilots to find out what went wrong. If we can overcome it we'll make absolutely certain the dream lives on.

"The bravery of test pilots generally cannot be overstated."

Sir Richard was speaking at the Mojave Air and Space Port, where National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators arrived to begin their work on Saturday lunchtime.

Initial findings are expected to be revealed on Saturday night.

NTSB acting chairman Christopher Hart said it was not yet known if a black box data recorder was installed on the doomed craft.

He said: "This was a test flight and test flights are typically very well documented in terms of data.

"We may get some video feed. We may have lots of evidence that will help us with the investigative process."

The tragedy occurred after SpaceShipTwo fired up its rocket following a high-altitude drop from its WhiteKnightTwo mothership.

The fatality is the project's fourth after three people were killed in a 2007 explosion while working for Scaled Composites, the company that teamed up with Virgin Galactic to build SpaceShipTwo.

Virgin Galactic had been aiming to become the first commercial "spaceline", by beginning tourist flights to the edge of space next year.

British physicist Stephen Hawking, comedian Russell Brand, actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher, and singer Justin Bieber are said to have signed up.

Sir Richard told reporters a new customer had enrolled since the crash, while one customer said he has not been deterred despite the tragedy.
