Ray Teret, a close friend of disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile, has been found guilty of raping and indecently assaulting schoolgirls.

Teret, who was also a DJ, attacked 11 victims throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

A crown court jury in Manchester heard the 73-year-old used his status as a local celebrity to single out vulnerable girls in nightclubs and discos.

He took one victim back to his flat and raped her while Savile was present.

The court was told that after the attack Teret told the 15-year-old: "You should be thanking us."

A lawyer for one of Teret's victims and 169 of Savile's, Liz Dux, told Sky News Tonight: "This is the closest we are ever going to get to having Savile on trial.

Briton Jailed For Killing Fiancee In Paris Hotel

By Peter Allen, in Paris

Briton Ian Griffin has been jailed for 20 years for murdering his fiancee in a Paris hotel room.

Griffin, 45, remained impassive as a judge in the French capital sentenced him for the brutal killing of Kinga Legg, 36, at the five-star Bristol in May 2009.

The couple had been on a glamorous trip to the south of France to get married in Monaco, but Griffin was seeing another woman, 34-year-old Tracy Baker, at the same time.

Ms Baker, who had a child with Griffin after he was controversially released on bail last year, was also in the Paris Assizes when the jury verdict was read out on Friday night by Judge Didier Safar.

She was overcome with emotion, as she saw Griffin, who was on crutches, led to the cells.

A few hours earlier, Griffin had told the court that he wanted to apologise to Ms Legg's parents, saying: "To think I could do that to the girl I love, that's killing me. I have been through every regret, every emotion. I would give my life for her's tomorrow."

But prosecutor Philippe Courroye said he failed to believe any of the versions Griffin offered for the murder, saying the case was a classic one of "violence against women".

The prosecutor also dismissed suggestions that Griffin was a successful businessman, describing him as "a kind of gigolo" who lived off his girlfriends and wealthy parents.

Pointing to Griffin sitting a few feet away, sitting with his crutches beside him and claiming to be seriously ill, Mr Courroye said: "He is trying to fool you. He lies to everyone, and, through his lies, he kills for a second time."

Ms Legg's corpse was found in the bath of the couple's £1000-a-night room, after Griffin, who claims it was all "an accident", fled to England in his Porsche 911 sports car.

Griffin, originally from Warrington, Cheshire, said he went into a "black hole" of memory loss caused by alcohol and anti-depressants.

But Mr Courroye said: "There were more than 100 bruises, 17 on the skull, 33 on the chest. They ranged from the face to the feet. If there were so many injuries, it is because he wanted to kill her.

"The autopsy revealed the power of the blows. It was a martyred body. She was beaten to death. This is a subject that has a name – violence against women."

Griffin has been living freely on bail for the past year-and-a-half with Ms Baker, herself an entrepreneur who appeared on the Dragon's Den TV show this year, and the couple have just had a baby together.

After the verdict was read out, Ms Legg's brother, Marek Wolf, said: "I need to say it was the correct verdict."

Referring to the legal process which started when Griffin was extradited to France in 2011, Mr Wolf, added: "I'm glad after three years the trial is finished but nobody can give my sister back to me or my parents."

Bodies Of Mother And Daughter Found In Gorge

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 05 Desember 2014 | 10.03

The body of a newborn baby has been discovered in a Bristol gorge just hours after 30-year-old mother Charlotte Bevan was found dead nearby.

Police say they are confident the infant is Ms Bevan's baby daughter, Zaani Tiana Bevan Malbrouck.

Ms Bevan, whose body was identified on Thursday afternoon, was filmed on CCTV walking out of Bristol Maternity Hospital on Tuesday carrying the child.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Crisp said the infant's body was found near where officers located Ms Bevan.

"I regret to inform you that a short time ago on the cliff face close to Charlotte, the body of a small baby girl has been found," he said.

"No formal identification has so far taken place, but we anticipate that it is going to be Charlotte's daughter.

"We will be conducting an investigation on behalf of the coroner. At the moment we are not treating either death as suspicious."

A statement released by Ms Bevan's mother Rachel Fortune said: "My beautiful daughter and granddaughter are now at peace.

"The response and support from the public has been overwhelming and we would like to thank you all."

Ms Bevan's body was found in the Avon Gorge below the suburb of Clifton late on Wednesday.

She had walked out of hospital wearing no coat and hospital slippers, prompting fears for her safety.

Police had earlier informed the family that a body had been found.

Elizabeth Cairncross, headteacher of Wells Cathedral School, her former school, released a statement of condolence.

She said: "We all are deeply saddened at Wells to hear of Charlotte's tragic death.

"We remember Charlotte with great affection, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this terrible time."

Officers continued searching the steep sides of the gorge below the Bristol suburb of Clifton for the baby after the mother was found.

The baby's father Pascal Malbrouck told a news conference on Wednesday that he was very concerned about Ms Bevan as she had suffered from mental health problems.

Sky's Siobhan Robbins said one line of enquiry is focusing on the possibility that Ms Bevan may have stopped taking medication for the mental illness because she was breastfeeding.

Ms Bevan is believed to have been suffering from schizophrenia and depression and had been sleep deprived after giving birth.

A spokeswoman for University Hospitals Bristol Trust said a review of the care Ms Bevan and her baby received would be undertaken.

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Charlotte Bevan and offer our heartfelt condolences to her family," the Trust spokeswoman said.

"While it remains unclear as to how Charlotte died, we will be conducting a thorough review of the care Charlotte and her baby received to see if there was anything we could have done to prevent this tragic and unexplained death."

Hamas: Loss Of Hope Behind Jerusalem Violence

Hamas: Loss Of Hope Behind Jerusalem Violence

By Tom Rayner, Middle East Reporter

The leader of Hamas has claimed rising violence in Jerusalem is the result of Palestinians having lost hope of any "just solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an exclusive interview from his base in Qatar, Khalid Meshaal said recent deadly attacks against Israelis were the fault of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "playing with fire" by allowing right-wing activists to enter the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

Mr Meshaal warned it could lead to "chaos in the region".

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of being behind attacks on civilians, and said Palestinian leaders were inciting violence by misrepresenting its policies regarding the sacred area, known to Jews as Temple Mount.

Hamas, deemed a terrorist organisation by EU governments and the US, has not claimed responsibility for the attacks - but Mr Meshaal refused to condemn them.

"The Palestinian people no longer have anything to lose in light of the continuation of the occupation and settlements, stealing the land, the attacks on the women and children and the Holy sites," he said.

Vicar And Daughter Held In Baby Murder Probe

A vicar, along with his wife and daughter, are being questioned by police over the suspicious death of a baby boy.

Rev Jim Percival was arrested, together with his 28-year-old daughter, Ruth, on suspicion of murder, conspiracy to conceal the birth of a child and sexual offences.

Susan, his wife, only faces questions about the alleged concealment.

Officers have been granted an additional 30 hours to talk to them after they were held on Tuesday in Freckleton, Lancashire, where Rev Percival is the vicar of Holy Trinity CE Church.

Officers had been called to a property - thought to be the vicarage - on 25 November, in response to reports that a woman had suffered a stillbirth.

In a statement, Lancashire Constabulary said: "When police attended, the body of a newly born baby boy was discovered at the address and an investigation was launched.

"The baby's mother, a 28-year-old woman, was taken by ambulance to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where she was treated and later released.

"Following numerous inquiries, the death of the baby boy is now being treated as suspicious. A post-mortem examination has been carried out and the cause of death is currently inconclusive."

One of their neighbours said: "They are a quiet family. I didn't even know the daughter was pregnant."

The Diocese of Blackburn has confirmed it "is aware of the situation regarding Rev Jim Percival and his family" and is working "closely" with police.

Osborne 'To Stay On Course To Prosperity'

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 03 Desember 2014 | 10.03

By Darren McCaffrey, Sky Political Reporter

Around a billion pounds of investment for small and medium sized businesses, relief on petrol prices and changes to business rates to help the High Street are just some of the Austumn Statement measures to be announced later.

Plans to make stamp duty more progressive, easing the bill for people buying at the bottom end of the market but with possible heavier charges on more expensive homes, could also be unveiled by George Osborne later in what has been described as the "Government's last big economic event".

The Chancellor will say: "Our long-term economic plan is working. I say: we stay the course. We stay the course to prosperity.

"We support people who want to work hard and get on. And it is for their sakes that we resolve to stay on course to prosperity."

The Treasury and the Bank of England have agreed to extend the Funding For Lending (FLS) scheme by another year to January 2016 - underwriting loans specifically for smaller firms.

George Osborne is also allocating an extra £400m to expand the state-owned British Business Bank's venture capital programme.

And it will be handed funding to guarantee up to £500m of new lending in 2015-16.

The Chancellor is also expected to scrap the Fair Fuel Stabiliser, which would have seen petrol prices increase by 1p next March.

Air Passenger Duty on children's flights is also due to be abolished, which could reduce the cost of long haul flights by hundreds of pounds for families.

And there could be help for the High Street, with a review of business rates and how it is calculated due to be completed by early 2016. Rising rates have in part been blamed for hitting traditional town centre shops.

The Chancellor is expected to have to acknowledge that net borrowing will miss targets and reach about £90bn – greater than the £86.5bn predicted in March during the budget.

Lower tax revenues as a result of an increase in low paid jobs and continued high social security bills will only increase pressure on future budgets, meaning possible further cuts or tax increases.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls, speaking ahead of the Autumn Statement, accused the Conservative party of shaping the wrong sort of economy recovery.

He said: "David Cameron and George Osborne have now failed every test and broken every promise they made on the economy.

Osborne Pledges More An 'Autumn Restatement'

So far it has been more of the Autumn Restatement than anything else - with the big headline numbers on road building and flood defences already known.

A third of the extra £2bn for the NHS already exists. Even the headline measures of what the tabloids will call a "White Van Man" Budget, on fuel duty and air passenger duty for children, are small fry.

Approving the principle of devolving corporation tax to Northern Ireland is a significant step in the context of the Democratic Unionist Party's possible parliamentary bargaining power.

The Scottish government too has shown its concerns.

And watch out for the impact of the Welfare Cap.

A series of fascinating discussions have gone on between the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Essentially the OBR will judge whether capped welfare (excluding pensions) can be kept under £119.5bn next year.

The big picture will be a fiscal announcement with no net giveaways - basically fiscally neutral - but perhaps even a small symbolic takeaway.

That is because, as we know, the cupboard remains bare even after four years of deficit reduction.

So the main story will be the big macroeconomic numbers. There will be a lot to boast about.

From the best growth figures in the G7 to the extraordinary jobs numbers. But given that, the deficit numbers and poor tax receipts cancelled any hope for proper pre election goodies.

Nigel Lawson's pre-election income tax cut of 2p in the pound was never going to be repeated, except as a vague conditional Conservative Conference aspiration.

For there is a nagging doubt at the heart of the Conservatives. After a year of recovery and a rapid rise in the feel good factor (measured by consumer confidence) and rises in house prices, Conservative poll ratings have remained stubbornly anchored in the low 30s. The feel good factor is missing in action.

That rise in consumer confidence flattened out in the summer, and is now dipping slightly. Black clouds are emerging from the continent.

More than that, the Miliband economic narrative on "cost of living crisis" remains strong, even if not all those who believe it will vote Labour.

Economic pessimists are fuelling UKIP's surge up the polls.

The sight of the Chancellor and Prime Minister apparently crowing about macroeconomic success has not been a vote winner in these circumstances.

It did not work in a thoroughly normal constituency such as Rochester and Strood.

So yes, the aim of this Autumn Statement will be to get the argument away from Europe and immigration and on to the economy.

But, Mr Osborne will also try to modulate the boasts. The argument to be made will be a relative one.

People might not feel it everywhere, but a corner has been turned, and if they don't feel good, at least they might feel less bad than they would under "an untested Opposition with no economic plan".

That is more "feel better" than necessarily "feel good".

Drug Addiction Treatment Doubles In 10 Years

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 02 Desember 2014 | 10.03

By Nick Martin, Sky News Correspondent

The number of adults seeking treatment for heroin and crack cocaine addiction in England has more than doubled in 10 years, new figures have revealed.

While the total number of heroin and crack cocaine addicts has fallen below 300,000 for the first time since estimates began, there is a generation still hooked - the so-called Trainspotting Generation.

The disaffected, heroin-addicted young people immortalised in Irvine Welsh's bestselling novel are getting older.

More than a third of the total population of adults in treatment centres are aged 40 or over, according to Public Health England.

Many started using heroin in the epidemics of the 1980s and 1990s when good-quality, cheap opiate flooded the inner cities.

But as they enter old age there are warnings that dwindling health and dependence on heroin could place an increased burden on the National Health Service.

Louise Ford, deputy manager at the Smithfield Detox Centre in Manchester, told Sky News: "For many people of this age group there is a sense of 'now or never' in finally getting the treatment they need.

"For the over-40s is could be redundancy, bereavement or failing health that finally prompts them to come in for help. The treatment is not easy and many relapse."

For those who have not sought treatment, life is a cycle of "scoring" heroin and finding the money to pay for it.

Homeless Paul, 42, has been taking heroin since he was 17 years old.

His partner Jill, 39, was introduced to the drug at the age of 13. They take heroin in the back streets of Manchester's city centre.

He said: "I had a good life, what you'd call an average life, a car, a flat. I got laid off last year. I had never been out of work before.

"Now I wake up, go and score, go and take it, go and find a pitch and start raising money again to score again and that goes on and on.

"If I don't get help now I'll still be doing this into my 50s and 60s and I don't want that. Heroin just makes you feel bad when you don't have it. It doesn't make you feel good anymore."

But there is hope in the form of recovered addicts like Steve Cundell, who first dabbled in heroin so that he could come down from ecstasy fuelled raves in the 1980s.

He went from experimenting to dealing in a matter of weeks.

He said: "I thought it wouldn't grip me but it did and very, very fast.

"I decided the best way to get my supply was to start dealing in it. My every waking hour was consumed by heroin.

"It used to play on my mind so much that I was getting older and older and I had not achieved anything - that I was going to wake up one day 65 or 70 years old still on heroin."

Mr Cundell is now a peer mentor on a rehabilitation course run by Turning Point and tries to help others.

He added: "I like to think I have something to give back and it helps my recovery - because I'm not out of the woods yet."

Cancer Doctor Jailed For Child Sex Attacks

A children's doctor who sexually abused 18 boys in his care has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Dr Myles Bradbury carried out examinations on children "purely for his own sexual gratification" and with no medical justification, Cambridge Crown Court heard.

The cancer specialist admitted 25 offences in September involving 18 boys aged 10 to 16 whom he had treated while working as a paediatric haematologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in the city.

The abuse included seven counts of sexual assault and 12 of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

Sentencing him, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth said: "For a doctor to attack children in this way is one of the worst forms of sexual abuse imaginable.

"These boys were all vulnerable and gravely ill. In all my years on the bench, I have never come across such a grotesque betrayal of your Hippocratic oath."

The judge said Bradbury's sentence would be reduced because of his early guilty pleas, although "some might observe" that the weight of evidence meant he had little option but to admit the offences.

Victims' lawyer Renu Daly said the families were "relieved" that Bradbury had been given a lengthy jail term as it meant he would be unable to harm more children.

His victims included children with haemophilia, leukaemia and other serious illnesses, some of whom have since died.

Bradbury, a married 41-year-old father-of-one from Herringswell, Suffolk, would abuse the boys on occasions when "the parent was a curtain away".

He would also secretly film them using a camera pen, and more than 16,000 images were found on a disc at his home.

Bradbury was described as "a man of great charm and persuasiveness" whom everybody trusted.

When one victim raised concerns with his mother, she said: "He's a doctor, it must be necessary."

Prosecutor John Farmer said Bradbury had a "longstanding, unlawful, sexual interest in boys" and abused them "for his own personal gratification".

The Crown Prosecution Service in the East of England said it was "one of the worst" cases of a breach of trust it had ever prosecuted.

Bradbury's barrister, Angela Rafferty, said in mitigation that his guilty pleas had spared his victims the ordeal of having to give evidence.

Bradbury accepts that what he did was "repugnant", Ms Rafferty told the court.

The offences were carried out over four-and-a-half years from 2008.

Bradbury's crimes came to light in November 2013 after an 11-year-old told his grandmother about what had happened during a visit and how he had been told to keep it a secret.

Bradbury was suspended by Addenbrooke's before being arrested the following month.

Dr Keith McNeil, chief executive of the Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, said: "Our thoughts today are with our patients and families who were victims of Bradbury's shocking and cynical abuse.

"Today's sentencing of Bradbury cannot undo the damage he caused but he is finally behind bars and is no longer a risk to vulnerable children.

"The lengthy sentence shows Bradbury's abhorrent betrayal and manipulation of his position as a doctor has been fully recognised."

The white officer who shot dead black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, quit because of threats against the police department, his lawyer has said.

Darren Wilson's resignation with immediate effect was announced on Saturday, four months after the confrontation that fuelled violent protests in the St Louis suburb and across the US.

Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson told a news conference on Sunday: "The threats (from protesters) have been egregious and counselling is available to the officers."

He was joined by Ferguson Mayor James Knowles, who said Mr Wilson, 28, received no severance payment package.

The city leader also unveiled proposals to boost the number of black members on the community's police force, including a stipend for officers who live locally.

Bank Fines To Help Pay For £3bn NHS Boost

Chancellor George Osborne says he plans to use bank fines to improve family doctors' services.

In his Autumn Statement on Wednesday, Mr Osborne is expected to announce that the move will provide an extra £1.1bn to be spent over four years and would come from bank fines levied on financial institutions for foreign exchange manipulation.

It is in addition to a further £2bn he will use to help make the NHS more efficient for taxpayers and more effective for patients.

He says that cash injection is possible because the economy is growing and that under his stewardship the Government has brought the public finances under control. "If you have a strong economy you can have a strong NHS," the Chancellor said on Sunday.

In November, five banks were fined a total of £1.1bn by the Financial Conduct Authority for Forex fiddling.

The idea of using bank fines to pay for NHS improvements was first suggested by shadow chancellor Ed Balls in a speech earlier this month.

Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham welcomed the plans but said it would not help GPs and A&E departments already struggling this winter.

He said: "Of course, more money will help but it won't solve the problems that I've been describing - the crisis in the NHS is very real indeed. This money will help but will be nowhere near enough."

Mr Burnham told Sky News that Labour would provide an additional £2.5bn a year for the NHS over and above what Mr Osborne had pledged.

Mr Osborne's announcement follows the publication of the five-year 'Forward View' plan drawn up by the NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens which warned of a looming £8bn funding shortfall by the end of the next parliament.

Mr Stevens welcomed Mr Osborne's plans and said: "Today represents an extremely welcome vote-of-confidence in the NHS' own five-year plan."

Mr Osborne is expected to endorse the Stevens proposals as the best way to deliver "a world class and universal NHS that is sustainable for the long term".
