A Hillsborough campaigner honoured in the New Year's Day list has told Sky News she believes the award is part of an apology from the establishment.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, described her CBE as "bitter sweet" and said she had doubts about accepting it.

Mrs Aspinall who lost her son James, 18, in the tragedy said she consulted a survivor about the award.

"I needed to talk to a survivor … and this survivor broke down and said, 'Please, please accept it. It is part and parcel of an apology'," she said.

"I decided, when he said that, if that's what it does for him I hope it does the same for the rest of the survivors: That the establishment are acknowledging all these people who are stigmatised. To me, you can't refuse that."

Poppy Display Creators Named On Honours List

The artists who created a breathtaking installation of poppies at the Tower of London have been awarded MBEs in the New Year Honours.

Paul Cummins and Tom Piper were the masterminds of Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, which saw 888,246 ceramic poppies gradually fill the moat of the Tower. Each poppy signified a British or Colonial military death during World War I.

More than five million people attended the installation, with the Queen herself saying: "The only possible reaction to walking among them was silence."

Mr Cummins said he was "taken aback and shocked" to receive his MBE, but was "truly grateful" for the recognition.

"Everyone who worked on Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, to me, should feel a part of this MBE, without them this installation wouldn't have been created," he said.

Glasgow Healthcare Worker Diagnosed With Ebola

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Desember 2014 | 10.03

A healthcare worker who returned to Glasgow from Sierra Leone last night has been confirmed as having Ebola.

The woman, thought to be a nurse, returned to Scotland via Casablanca and London Heathrow, arriving into Glasgow Airport on a British Airways flight at around 11.30pm.

The patient - understood to have been volunteering for Save The Children - was admitted to hospital early this morning after feeling unwell and was placed into isolation at 7.50am. She is in a stable condition.

She has been isolated and is receiving treatment in the specialist Brownlee Unit for Infectious Diseases on the Gartnavel Hospital campus, but will be taken to the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Their infectious diseases unit is run by a dedicated team of doctors and laboratory staff and access is restricted to trained medical staff.

A specially designed tent is set up around the patient's bed so the infection can be contained while they are treated.

Anyone who is at risk through contact with the patient in transit is to be contacted and closely monitored.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government Resilience Committee and has also spoken to Prime Minister David Cameron.

She said: "Our first thoughts at this time must be with the patient diagnosed with Ebola and their friends and family. I wish them a speedy recovery.

"Scotland has been preparing for this possibility from the beginning of the outbreak in West Africa and I am confident that we are well prepared."

She added in a news conference that the risk to other people is "extremely low to the point of negligible".

The woman is the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola while in the UK.

Anyone who was on the Heathrow to Glasgow flight last night is asked to call 08000 858531

How Will Britain Stop Ebola From Spreading?

The Ebola case in Glasgow will create considerable concerns among people about its potential spread, but effective containment could make the health worker who recently returned from Sierra Leone an isolated case.

Sky's Health Correspondent Thomas Moore said close monitoring of anyone who came into contact with the patient after they became infected, as well as good practices during treatment, were key to preventing further cases.

"The key incubation period is considered to be 21 days and we have seen in other countries events where partners of people who have come down with Ebola are kept at home or monitored very closely to make sure they are not developing symptoms and there is no onward transmission," he said.

"The key point in an outbreak is to contain it, to prevent it spreading. The further it spreads the more difficult it is to contact trace people and bring the virus back under control."

Health officials have said the patient in Scotland only came into contact with one person since displaying symptoms, however the passengers who travelled on a flight from Casablanca to Heathrow and a subsequent flight from Heathrow to Glasgow with the infected person on Sunday are being traced.

The Ebola virus is not spread through ordinary social contact such as shaking hands or travelling on public transport.

Only people who have come into contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person are at risk.

Anyone who was on the flight - or has recently return from the affected arreas of West Africa - and is worried about symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat or rash is advised to stay at home and call 111 or 999.

The unnamed patient is currently being treated at a specialist infectious diseases unit at Gartnaval Hospital in Glasgow

But she will be moved to The Royal Free Hospital in London, one of five High Level Isolation units in Britain - the others are in Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and Belfast.

One Dead And 15,000 Stranded In French Alps

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

Around 15,000 vehicles are stuck in the French Alps as heavy snow blankets roads leading to the region's popular ski resorts.

The snow and ice hit as holidaymakers travelled to and from ski resorts in the Savoie region in southeastern France.

Authorities have set up shelters in 12 towns to cope with the number of travellers forced to leave their cars.

The freezing conditions caused the death of a 27-year-old man whose car slid into a ravine in the Belledonne mountain range.

France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has urged drivers "to exercise the utmost caution" and asked drivers to delay their journeys if possible.

Xbox 'Hacker' Reveals Why He Attacked Consoles

By Joe Tidy, Sky News Reporter

A hacker who claims to be behind the Christmas Day cyber attack on computer games consoles has told Sky News he wanted to expose poor security.

The man - known as Ryan - said a group of two or three people masterminded the attack and had no regrets about forcing "a couple of kids to spend their time with their families instead of playing games".

Ryan - thought to be a member of Lizard Squad - admitted that he and his team of hackers considered the attack a "sort of a game", and partly did it for their own amusement.

In an interview from Finland, over Skype, with Sky's Joe Tidy, Ryan said the hacking team was small and included members who were under the age of 20.

"We have massive capability to take down networks like this," he said.

"This attack was basically done by three people. We had a couple of people from outside the group helping with the attacks, helping us a little bit, but most of the traffic was coming from one or two people."

Asked why the team carried out the attack, he said: "Mostly to raise awareness - to amuse ourselves.

"Also one of the big aspects here was raising awareness regarding the low state of computer security at these companies.

"Because these companies make tens of millions every month from subscriber fees and that doesn't even include purchases made by their customers.

"They should have more than enough funding to be able to protect against these attacks.

"And if they can't protect against the attacks on their core business networks then I don't think they're really doing that much on their overall level of security.

"And these customers are still giving these companies their credit card numbers and such."

Ryan continued: "It is sort of a game for us I have to admit. I completely understand that it's a bit unethical.

"I'd be rather worried if those people didn't have anything better to do than play games on their consoles on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

"I mean I can't really be (inaudible) feel bad. I might have forced a couple of kids to spend their  time with their families instead of playing games."

The Xbox Live status page said on Saturday that Microsoft services had been restored while PlayStation said it was getting to grips with the issue.

But reassurances the networks were returning to normal were met with a mixed response on social media.

Gaming fan Sho Shallow tweeted: "Finally my PlayStation is working. You lot robbed my Xmas."

But another user, Steh Abner, wrote: "Woke up in a good mood, but I still can't get on Xbox, so I am not in a good mood."

The attack on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live services meant downloaded games could not be played and gamers could not compete against others around the world.

Royal Family Attend Christmas Church Service

The Queen has marked Christmas Day by attending a traditional church service at Sandringham.

Well-wishers started gathering before dawn in the bitter cold to catch a glimpse of the royals - and by mid-morning thousands were present.

Queen Elizabeth was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh for the service at St Mary Magdalene's church on the Norfolk estate.

But the Duchess of Cornwall did not attend the service on advice from doctors after she "put her back out", Clarence House said.

Camilla "has been in pain and is receiving physiotherapy. The doctors have advised against any travel," a Clarence House spokeswoman said.

Queen Elizabeth has used her traditional Christmas broadcast to call for reconciliation, citing the Scottish referendum and Northern Ireland.

In her annual address to the nation, the monarch also hailed the medical workers who helped fight Ebola in Africa.

The message was broadcast after the Queen attended the traditional church service at Sandringham.

The head of state talked about the poignant moment when First World War forces put aside their differences and met in no-man's land during the Christmas truce of 1914.

She touched on how she felt visiting the poppy installation at the Tower of London last October.

"The ceramic poppies at the Tower of London drew millions and the only possible reaction to walking among them was silence.

Jack Sweeney, his wife Lorraine, 69, and Erin McQuade, 18, died on Monday after the council vehicle drove through a street full of Christmas shoppers.

Mr Sweeney, 68, from Dumbarton, was a former president of Bramalea Celtic supporters club in Canada.

A statement posted on the Bramalea CeItic supporters club Facebook page said: "It is with great shock and sadness we share with you our friend and past president Jack Sweeney, his wife Lorraine and granddaughter Erin were victims of today's tragedy in Glasgow.

"Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the Sweeney family."

Relative John Sweeney described himself as "feeling heartbroken" on Facebook.

He wrote: "No words can describe the pain. R.I.P. Jack, Lorraine and Erin.

"Thoughts and prayers go out to the other families that lost loved ones as well."

Miss McQuade worked at the luxury Cameron House Hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond.

The hotel said in a statement: "We are saddened to hear we have lost one of our brightest and dedicated members of housekeeping staff, Erin McQuade.

"We want to offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Erin and to all those who have been affected by the tragic events at George Square yesterday."

The three other victims have been identified as Gillian Ewing, 52, from Edinburgh; Stephenie Tait, 29, from Glasgow and Jacqueline Morton, 51, from Glasgow.

Ten people were also injured in the crash, six of whom remain in hospitals around the city including the driver of the lorry.

A statement from Police Scotland said four of those injured are in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

One is expected to be discharged later on Tuesday, one is in a critical condition two patients are stable.

One of those injured is in a stable condition at the Western Infirmary.

The final person is expected to be discharged from Southern General Hospital on Tuesday.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates said: "This is a tragic incident which occurred in the heart of Glasgow city centre at a time when people were preparing for the festive season.

"If anyone has any information that may assist our enquiries please contact Police Scotland on 101."

A special prayer service has been held for the victims at the St George's Tron Parish Church which is near the scene of the crash on George Square.

Reverend Alastair Duncan, minister of St George's Tron Church of Scotland, led prayers for the victims and all those affected.

He said Glasgow had been left "in sorrow and shock" and "in a place of brokenness and grief" as a result of the "pain and devastation that has come to families in this city".

He said the accident had "affected the lives of ordinary people as they went about their business in excited anticipation of Christmas".

Dozens of floral tributes have been placed at the scene, including by Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson.

It has been announced that a minute's silence will be held at Celtic Park on Saturday before Celtic's match against Ross County.

A fund will be set up on Wednesday to help the victims of the crash. Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said there had been "tremendous" offers of support.

The city council has donated £20,000 to the fund, and the Lord Provost's goodwill fund has matched that amount.
